Wat Samai Kongka

Buddhist "Heaven and Hell" Temple in Koh Phangan
|
Wat Samai Kongka is without doubt one of the most weirdly temples in Koh Phangan island. Located just past the Koh Phangan Hospital, it offers a journey through Buddhist Heaven and Hell.
Wat Samai Kongka is indeed one-of-a-kind temple well worth a visit due to its weird originality. A visit with a local guide is recommended if you wish get further details about the various concepts represented at the temple as touches of Buddhism, Hinduism, and even Taoism are all mixed together there. |

This is temple where you will find a strange sculpture exhibition which we have written about before (see below) but this time we are here for the temple and grounds themself. You will be asked to take your shoes off when entering some of the buildings, including the sermon hall and the chedi. There is a very amazing story behind Wat Samai Kongka and an artistic graveyard for the head monk masters throughout hundreds of years dating back to six to six hundred years ago. |

Wat Samai Kongka is really scary and not really recommended for young children. Scenes showing torture applied to sinners according to their sins are vivid and straightforward and leave no space to the imagination. Buddhist Hell (Naraka) awaits you, if you do not follow the five precepts of Buddhism during your life. In the Wat Samai Kongka, the Buddha teaches about hell in vivid detail. |
